Jeonnam Province Pushes for Integrated Relocation of Gwangju Civil and Military Airports as a ‘National Task of the Times’• Top priority on Muan County’s three conditions: early relocation, ₩1 trillion support from Gwangju City, and substantial national aid• Governor Kim Yung-rok: “This is the last golden opportunity to revive Muan International Airport”
Jeollanam-do Province announced its firm commitment to pursue the integrated relocation of Gwangju’s civil and military airports to Muan International Airport, calling it an inevitable national task and a long-standing aspiration of Jeonnam residents.
Since its opening in 2007, Muan International Airport has struggled to attract domestic passengers due to the continued operation of nearby Gwangju Airport, just 40 kilometers away, leaving it as a “half-functional airport” limited mainly to international flights.
To address this, the provincial government proposed the integrated relocation of Gwangju’s civil and military airports as a realistic solution to revitalize Muan International Airport and has been consistently engaging residents and building public consensus.
During a Town Hall Meeting in June, President Lee Jae-myung emphasized that “the relocation of the military airport is a responsibility of the state,” instructing the formation of a six-party consultative task force (TF) under the Presidential Office — a turning point in the long-stalled discussions.
A recent public opinion survey also showed that 53.3% of Muan residents support the integrated relocation, marking the first time that support has surpassed opposition. Jeonnam Province has continued to promote the issue through national policy inclusion, public forums, and media outreach to expand positive awareness.
Governor Kim Yung-rok stated, “This is the last golden opportunity to revive Muan International Airport and create a future growth engine for Jeonnam and Gwangju. We will respect the will of Muan residents and work closely with the government and Gwangju City to find a practical solution.”
Going forward, Jeonnam Province plans to ensure that the three key conditions proposed by Muan County —
1. Early relocation of Gwangju’s civil airport before the completion of the KTX Honam Line Phase 2,
1. ₩1 trillion financial support from Gwangju City, and
1. Comprehensive national-level assistance —are given top priority in the six-party task force discussions. The province also plans to strengthen public engagement and promotional efforts to build broader local consensus.
