“숲이 키운 복령, 지역의 미래가 되다”

전라남도는 2025년 11월 ‘이달의 임업인’으로 화순 동복면에서 12년간 복령버섯을 재배하며 숲의 가치를 산업으로 확장해 온 최필승(48) 농업회사법인 미래로 대표를 선정했다고 밝혔다.

최 대표는 제8~9대 한국산림경영인협회 광주전남지회장을 지낸 부친 최남용(84) 씨가 평생 가꾼 산림을 이어받아 2013년부터 복령 재배에 뛰어든 2세대 전문 임업인이다.

임업후계자로 등록한 뒤 농업마이스터대학 버섯학과 졸업, 버섯종균 기능사 취득 등 전문성을 갖추며, “지식이 숲을 지킨다.”는 신념으로 임업의 미래를 모색해 왔다.

특히 그는 지상 재배 방식과 자체 종균 개발로 복령의 생산성과 품질을 높였고, 동복면의 건강한 소나무림에서 자란 복령을 활용해 샴푸·비누·선식·차 등 가공제품을 개발했다.

OEM 방식의 생산·판매를 통해 연 매출 1억 원을 기록하며, 생소했던 복령을 생활 속 임산물 브랜드로 끌어올렸다는 평가를 받고 있다.

복령은 소나무 뿌리에서 자라는 버섯으로, ‘동의보감’에 진정·이뇨·강장 효능이 기록돼 예로부터 한약재로 쓰여 왔다.

최근에는 피로회복, 항산화, 피부 개선 효과가 보고되며 건강식품·미용 산업에서도 주목받는다.

최 대표는 이러한 복령의 가치가 “숲이 주는 천혜의 선물”이라 강조하며, 한국전문임업인협회와 전남선도임업인협의회 등을 통해 복령 재배 강의와 기술 전수에도 앞장서고 있다.

그의 활동은 지역 임업의 전문성 강화와 신임산업 육성에 실질적 기여를 하고 있다는 평가다.

최 대표는 “복령은 우리 산의 숨은 보석 같은 존재”라며 “지속 가능한 산림경영을 통해 숲을 지키고, 숲이 주는 가치를 지역의 새로운 성장 동력으로 키우겠다.”고 말했다.

“Poria Grown by the Forest, Becoming the Future of the Region”
Jeonnam Province Selects Choi Pil-seung, a Poria Mushroom Master from Hwasun, as November’s ‘Forester of the Month’
Jeollanam-do has selected Choi Pil-seung (48), CEO of Miraero Agricultural Corporation, as its “Forester of the Month” for November 2025, recognizing his 12 years of cultivating poria mushrooms in Dongbok-myeon, Hwasun, and expanding the value of forests into a regional industry.
Choi is a second-generation professional forester who inherited the forest nurtured by his father, Choi Nam-yong (84), the 8th–9th president of the Korea Forest Managers Association Gwangju–Jeonnam Chapter. He began full-scale poria cultivation in 2013 after being registered as a forestry successor in 2012.
He strengthened his expertise by graduating from the Mushroom Department at the Jeonnam Agricultural Meister College and acquiring a mushroom culture technician certification—pursuing the belief that “knowledge protects the forest,” and seeking the future of sustainable forestry.
In particular, Choi introduced an above-ground cultivation method and developed his own fungal strains, improving both the productivity and quality of poria. Using high-quality poria grown in the healthy pine forests of Dongbok-myeon, he developed processed products such as shampoo, soap, powdered grain mixes, and tea.
Through OEM production and sales, he generates annual revenue of 100 million KRW, helping transform the once-unfamiliar poria into a recognizable and accessible forest product brand.
Poria is a type of mushroom that grows on the roots of pine trees. Though variable in shape—typically 10–30 cm, oval or sphere-like—it has been widely used as an herbal medicine, with Donguibogam documenting its calming, diuretic, and tonic effects. More recently, research has highlighted its benefits for fatigue recovery, antioxidant activity, and skincare, increasing its demand in the health food and beauty industries.
Choi emphasizes that poria is “a hidden gem of our forests” and actively contributes to regional forestry by teaching poria cultivation and transferring techniques through organizations such as the Korea Professional Foresters Association and the Jeonnam Leading Foresters Council.
His work is recognized as making a significant contribution to strengthening professional forestry and fostering new forest-based industries in the region.
Choi stated, “Poria is like a hidden treasure of our mountains. Through sustainable forest management, I will continue to protect our forests and help transform the value they provide into a new growth engine for the region.”
