전남 서남권의 미래 지도가 바뀌고 있다.
해남 솔라시도 기업도시 내 국가 AI컴퓨팅센터가 본 궤도에 오르며, 장성·강진에는 민간 주도 초대형 AI데이터센터 유치가 잇따라 성사됐다.

전남이 ‘분산형 데이터센터’ 국가 전략의 핵심 거점으로 떠오르며, 대한민국 AI 산업의 중추로 도약할 발판을 굳혔다.

지난 16일 전라남도청 서재필실에서는 장성군·강진군을 비롯해 베네포스, 대우건설, KT, 탑솔라 등 민간 기업과 KG엔지니어링, IPA, 유진투자증권, 시드인베스트먼트 등 금융·엔지니어링 파트너가 대거 참여한 AI데이터센터 구축 업무협약이 체결됐다.

장성군에는 2조 2,000억 원·200MW급, 강진군에는 3조 3,000억 원·300MW급의 메머드급 투자가 예고됐다.
단일 지역을 넘어 전남 전역의 산업 지형을 재편할 규모다.

이와 맞물려 해남 산이면 솔라시도 기업도시에서 추진 중인 국가 AI컴퓨팅센터 조성사업도 순항 중이다. 삼성SDS를 주축으로 네이버, 카카오 등 국내 IT 대기업이 참여한 컨소시엄은 최근 솔라시도 전망대에서 사업부지를 직접 확인했다.
영암호의 풍부한 용수 공급 능력, 단단한 지반, 대규모 확장성에 높은 만족감을 표했다.
총 2조 5,000억 원이 투입되는 국가 AI컴퓨팅센터는 오는 4월 첫 삽을 뜨고, 2028년 정식 가동을 목표로 한다.
최첨단 GPU 1만 5,000장 이상을 확보해 AI 연산 인프라의 핵심을 담당하며, 국가 차원의 AI 기술 주권을 실질적으로 뒷받침한다는 계획이다.

지난 8일에는 한전KDN과 해남군이 에너지 특화 AI에너지센터 협약을 체결, 전력·데이터의 통합 관리와 실증 생태계 구축에도 속도를 냈다.

전남의 전략은 분명하다.

장성·강진의 민간 데이터센터와 해남 솔라시도의 국가 AI컴퓨팅센터를 ‘양날개’로 삼아, 재생에너지 기반의 안정적 전력, 넉넉한 부지, 신속한 인허가 환경을 결합한다는 구상이다.

여기에 광주가 보유한 AI 인재 풀이 연결되면, 다가올 행정통합의 시너지는 AI 생태계의 경쟁력을 한 단계 더 끌어올릴 수 있다.

이제 전남은 ‘가능성’을 말하지 않는다. 착공과 투자, 숫자와 일정이 증명한다.

서남권에서 뛰기 시작한 AI의 심장은, 대한민국을 넘어 글로벌 AI 허브로 향하고 있다.

“The Heart of AI Beats in the Southwestern Region”
Haenam Solasido–Jangseong–Gangjin Form a ‘Mammoth Data Center Belt’… Jeonnam Leaps Toward a Global AI Hub
The future map of southwestern Jeonnam is being redrawn.
As the National AI Computing Center within the Solasido Enterprise City in Haenam enters full swing, the attraction of large-scale, privately led AI data centers in Jangseong and Gangjin has been secured one after another.
With Jeonnam emerging as a core base of the national strategy for distributed data centers, the province has laid a firm foundation to rise as a central pillar of South Korea’s AI industry.
On the 16th, at the Seo Jaepil Hall of the Jeonnam Provincial Government, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed to build AI data centers. Participants included Jangseong-gun and Gangjin-gun, along with private companies such as Beneforce, Daewoo E&C, KT, and Topsolar, as well as a wide range of financial and engineering partners including KG Engineering, IPA, Eugene Investment & Securities, and Seed Investment.
The projects outline ₩2.2 trillion (200 MW) for Jangseong-gun and ₩3.3 trillion (300 MW) for Gangjin-gun—mammoth-scale investments that will reshape not only individual localities but the entire industrial landscape of Jeonnam.
In parallel, the National AI Computing Center project underway in Solasido Enterprise City, Sanimyeon, Haenam, is also progressing smoothly. A consortium led by Samsung SDS, with participation from major domestic IT companies such as Naver and Kakao, recently inspected the project site from the Solasido observatory.
They expressed strong satisfaction with the abundant water supply from Yeongam Lake, the solid ground conditions, and the large-scale expandability of the site.
With a total investment of ₩2.5 trillion, the National AI Computing Center is scheduled to break ground in April and aims for full operation by 2028.
Equipped with more than 15,000 cutting-edge GPUs, it will serve as a core AI computing infrastructure, providing tangible support for national AI technological sovereignty.
On the 8th, KEPCO KDN and Haenam County also signed an agreement to establish an energy-specialized AI energy center, accelerating efforts to build an integrated management and demonstration ecosystem linking power and data.
Jeonnam’s strategy is clear.
By using the private data centers in Jangseong and Gangjin and the National AI Computing Center in Haenam Solasido as its “two wings,” the province aims to combine stable power based on renewable energy, ample land, and a swift permitting environment.
When this is further connected with Gwangju’s pool of AI talent, the synergy of the upcoming administrative integration could elevate the competitiveness of the AI ecosystem to an entirely new level.
Jeonnam is no longer speaking in terms of “possibility.”
Construction starts, investments, concrete figures, and timelines now provide the proof.
The heart of AI that has begun to beat in the southwestern region is heading beyond Korea—toward becoming a global AI hub.
