전라남도와 행정안전부, 2026여수세계섬박람회 조직위원회가 2026여수세계섬박람회 준비 상황을 현장에서 재점검하며, 성공 개최를 위한 막바지 점검에 속도를 내고 있다.

전남도와 여수시는 최근 국무총리 현장점검에 이어 윤호중 행정안전부 장관과 함께 여수시 청소년해양교육원에서 박람회 준비상황 보고회를 열고, 진모지구 주행사장 일원을 직접 점검했다고 밝혔다.

이번 점검은 일부 언론과 온라인에서 제기된 준비 상황 우려를 불식하고, 국무총리 방문 이후 후속 점검 차원에서 행사 전반을 재확인하기 위해 마련됐다.

■ 공정률 60%… “계획대로 순항”
현재 박람회 전체 공정률은 약 60% 수준으로, 주요 공정이 계획에 따라 정상 추진되고 있는 것으로 확인됐다.
주행사장 토목공사는 81%, 전시관 공사는 35%의 진척률을 보이고 있으며, 오는 7월까지 주요 시설 조성을 마무리한 뒤 8월 사전점검을 거쳐 9월 개막에 차질 없이 대비할 계획이다.

■ 해양쓰레기·방치선박 정비 ‘속도’
행사장 주변 환경 개선도 병행 추진되고 있다.
항만 내 방치 선박은 6월까지 정비를 완료하고, 해양쓰레기 문제 해결을 위해 민·관 합동 집중 수거 작업을 진행하는 등 쾌적한 해양환경 조성에 힘을 쏟고 있다.
또한 섬 지역 화장실, 급수시설 등 편의 인프라 확충을 통해 방문객 불편 최소화에 나설 방침이다.

■ 태풍·폭염 대응… 안전관리 체계 강화
박람회 기간 발생할 수 있는 각종 재난 상황에 대비한 안전관리 체계도 한층 강화된다.
태풍, 폭염 등 기상 상황별 대응 매뉴얼을 마련하고, 재난 수준의 위기 상황까지 고려한 종합 대응계획을 수립해 안전 확보에 총력을 기울일 계획이다.

■ “교통·편의·안전… 정부 협력 필수”
김영록 전남도지사는 “박람회의 성공적 개최를 위해 관람객 가림막 등 편의시설과 재해 대비 안전시설 확충이 필요하다”며 “여객선 반값 운임 지원, KTX 전라선 증편, 여수공항 부정기 국제선 운항 등 범정부 차원의 특별 교통대책이 반드시 뒷받침돼야 한다.”고 강조했다.
이어 “중앙정부의 관심과 지원에 깊이 감사드린다.”며 “남은 기간 철저한 준비를 통해 관람객 불편을 최소화하고, 대한민국을 대표하는 글로벌 해양행사로 성공시키겠다.”고 밝혔다.

한편, 2026여수세계섬박람회는 대한민국 섬과 해양 자원의 가치를 세계에 알리는 국제행사로, 전남의 해양관광·산업 경쟁력을 한 단계 끌어올릴 계기가 될 것으로 기대를 모으고 있다.

“60% Completion on Track… Comprehensive Inspection of Safety, Environment, and Transportation”

Jeollanam-do, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and the Organizing Committee for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo are accelerating final preparations for the successful hosting of the Expo, conducting on-site inspections of progress and readiness.
According to officials, Jeollanam-do and Yeosu City, together with Minister Yoon Ho-jung of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, recently held a briefing on the Expo preparations at the Yeosu Marine Youth Education Center and carried out an on-site inspection of the main venue in the Jinmo District. This follows an earlier inspection by the Prime Minister.
The inspection was arranged to address concerns raised by some media outlets and online platforms regarding the state of preparations, and to comprehensively review overall readiness following the Prime Minister’s visit.
■ 60% Completion Rate… “Proceeding as Planned”
The overall progress rate of the Expo currently stands at approximately 60%, with major construction works proceeding as scheduled.
Civil engineering work at the main venue has reached 81% completion, while exhibition halls are at 35%. Major facilities are expected to be completed by July, followed by pre-inspections in August, ensuring full readiness for the September opening.
■ Accelerating Marine Debris and Abandoned Vessel Cleanup
Environmental improvements around the venue are also underway.
Abandoned vessels in nearby ports will be cleared by June, while joint public-private efforts are being mobilized to intensively collect marine debris, enhancing the coastal environment.
In addition, convenience facilities such as restrooms and water supply systems on island areas will be expanded to minimize inconvenience for visitors.
■ Strengthening Safety Systems for Extreme Weather
Safety management systems are being reinforced to prepare for potential disasters during the Expo period.
Response manuals for various weather conditions, including typhoons and heatwaves, are being developed, alongside comprehensive contingency plans for disaster-level scenarios.
■ “Government Support Essential for Transport, Convenience, and Safety”
Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do emphasized, “To ensure the success of the Expo, it is essential to expand visitor facilities such as shading structures and disaster-prevention infrastructure.”
He added, “Comprehensive government support is crucial, including discounted ferry fares nationwide, increased KTX Jeolla Line services, and the operation of irregular international flights at Yeosu Airport.”
He further stated, “We sincerely appreciate the interest and support of the central government. We will continue thorough preparations to minimize inconvenience for visitors and successfully host a world-class marine event representing Korea.”
Meanwhile, the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo is expected to serve as a global platform to showcase Korea’s island and marine resources, while elevating Jeollanam-do’s competitiveness in marine tourism and industry.
