전라남도는 8일 나주 영산강 정원 일원에서 남도 정원의 아름다움과 우수성을 널리 알리고, 신진 정원작가를 발굴·육성하기 위한 ‘제6회 전라남도 정원페스티벌’ 개막식을 열었다.
이날 개막식에는 김영록 전라남도지사, 신정훈 국회의원, 윤병태 나주시장, 최명수·이재태 전남도의원, 이재남 나주시의회의장, 한동길 국립정원문화원장을 비롯해 도민과 관광객 등 5천여 명이 참석해 축제를 함께했다.
올해 페스티벌은 ‘영산강, 정원이 되다’를 주제로 오는 29일까지 22일간 진행되며, 대표정원 1개소, 작가정원 4개소, 동행정원 8개소, 시민정원 20개소 등 총 33개의 정원이 조성됐다.
관람객들은 영산강의 자연과 문화, 그리고 가을 남도의 정취가 어우러진 정원의 매력을 만끽할 수 있다.
대표정원은 우리나라 1세대 여성 조경가 정영선 작가가 나주 고유의 색과 멋, 역사를 담아 연출한 ‘영산강 정원’으로, 영산강의 생태와 시간을 예술적으로 표현했다.
작가정원은 전국 공모를 통해 선정된 양기삼 작가의 ‘강의 기억, 나주의 시간’, 김나영·김현아 공동작가의 ‘Journey of Two Wheels : 두 바퀴의 여정’, 김세희 작가의 ‘느러지 가락’, 박영란 작가의 ‘흐름 속의 정원’ 등으로 구성됐다.
각 정원은 남도의 풍류와 멋을 서정적으로 담아 예술성과 철학적 깊이를 더했다.
또한 동행정원은 전남산림연구원, 나주시산림조합, 나주시임업후계자협회, ㈜윤토 등 지역 유관기관과 기업이 함께 참여해 조성했다.
시민정원은 전남도 정원관리사 양성과정을 수료한 가드너와 일반 시민들이 참여해, 전문가 심사를 거쳐 선정된 20점이 피크닉가든 형태로 꾸며졌다.
행사가 집중되는 12일까지는 가족정원체험, 문화공연, 정원산업전, 스탬프투어, 정원문화체험 등 다양한 부대행사가 마련돼 관람객들에게 풍성한 볼거리와 즐길거리를 제공한다.
특히 행사장 주변에서는 나주영산강축제(8~12일), 나주농업페스타(8~12일), 전국나주마라톤대회(12일) 등 지역 대표 축제들도 함께 열려 나주 전역이 축제의 열기로 가득할 전망이다.
김영록 전라남도지사는 “나주 영산강 지방정원에서 남도 정원의 멋을 세계에 알릴 수 있어 뜻깊다.”며 “2023순천만국제정원박람회와 뉴욕문화원 전남 전통정원 ‘애양단’ 조성 등에서 쌓은 경험을 바탕으로, 앞으로도 전남형 정원관광과 2027 남도정원비엔날레 등 세계적 정원행사를 통해 정원문화산업의 새로운 패러다임을 선도하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

“Yeongsangang, Becoming a Garden” — Jeonnam Garden Festival Opens
- 33 gardens including signature, artist, and citizen gardens along the Yeongsangang River in Naju until the 29th -- A variety of programs including family garden experiences, performances, garden industry exhibition, and stamp tour -
Jeollanam-do Province announced that it held the opening ceremony of the 6th Jeollanam-do Garden Festival on October 8 at the Yeongsangang Garden in Naju. The festival aims to promote the beauty and excellence of Namdo gardens while fostering emerging garden designers.
The opening ceremony was attended by Governor Kim Yeong-rok, National Assemblyman Shin Jeong-hoon, Naju Mayor Yoon Byeong-tae, Provincial Assembly Members Choi Myeong-su and Lee Jae-tae, Naju City Council Chairman Lee Jae-nam, Korean Institute of Garden Culture Director Han Dong-gil, and around 5,000 residents and tourists who joined to celebrate the event.
This year’s festival, themed “Yeongsangang, Becoming a Garden,” runs for 22 days until October 29, featuring a total of 33 gardens — 1 signature garden, 4 artist gardens, 8 companion gardens, and 20 citizen gardens.Visitors can fully enjoy the charm of Namdo gardens where the nature and culture of the Yeongsangang River blend beautifully with the autumn scenery.
The signature garden, titled “Yeongsangang Garden,” was designed by Jeong Young-seon, Korea’s first-generation female landscape architect known for works such as Seonyudo Park and Yeouido Saetgang Ecological Park. Her work reinterprets Naju’s unique colors, aesthetics, and history, artistically expressing the ecology and flow of the Yeongsangang River.
The artist gardens, selected through a national competition, include:
• “Memory of the River, Time of Naju” by Yang Gi-sam,
• “Journey of Two Wheels” by Kim Na-young and Kim Hyun-ah,
• “Neureoji Melody” by Kim Se-hee, and
• “Garden in the Flow” by Park Young-ran.Each work embodies the elegance and spirit of Namdo through poetic and philosophical design.
The companion gardens were created with the participation of local organizations and companies, including the Jeonnam Forest Research Institute, Naju Forestry Cooperative, Naju Forestry Successor Association, and YoonTo Co., Ltd.
The citizen gardens were designed by graduates of Jeonnam’s garden manager training program and local citizens passionate about gardening. Twenty designs were selected through professional screening and created in the form of picnic gardens reflecting participants’ creative ideas.
Until October 12, when major events are concentrated, visitors can enjoy various side programs, such as family garden experiences, cultural performances, a garden industry exhibition, stamp tours, and hands-on cultural programs.
Additionally, several regional festivals — including the Naju Yeongsangang Festival (Oct. 8–12), Naju Agriculture Festa (Oct. 8–12), and National Naju Marathon (Oct. 12) — are being held nearby, filling the entire city with a festive atmosphere.
Governor Kim Yeong-rok said,
“It is truly meaningful to showcase the beauty of Namdo gardens to the world from the Yeongsangang Provincial Garden in Naju. Building on our successful experiences with the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo and the ‘Aeyangdan’ Traditional Garden project at the Korean Cultural Center in New York, Jeonnam will continue to lead a new paradigm in the garden culture industry through global events such as the Jeonnam Garden Tourism initiative and the 2027 Namdo Garden Biennale.”
