전라남도가 미래 청정에너지 산업의 핵심으로 꼽히는 인공태양(핵융합) 연구시설의 전남 유치 분위기 확산을 위해 ‘전 도민 릴레이 챌린지’를 가동했다.

첫 주자로 나선 김영록 전남도지사는 챌린지를 통해 “전남은 한국에너지공대, 에너지밸리 등 세계적 연구 인프라를 갖춘 최적지”라며 “전 도민의 힘을 모아 반드시 유치하겠다.‘고 강한 의지를 밝혔다.

김 지사는 다음 주자로 김태균 전남도의회 의장, 김대중 전남도교육감, 윤병태 나주시장을 지목했으며, 앞으로 대학 총장, 시장‧군수, 지역 사회단체 등 각계 인사의 참여로 도민 공감대 확산에 나설 계획이다.

인공태양(핵융합) 기술은 태양의 에너지 생성 원리를 모방하여 수소로 전기를 생산하는 차세대 청정에너지 기술이다. 탄소배출이 거의 없고, 안전성과 경제성이 뛰어나 AI·데이터 산업 시대의 초대형 전력 수요를 감당할 ‘미래 에너지 엔진’으로 주목받고 있다.

전남도는 태양광·해상풍력 등 풍부한 재생에너지 자원, 한국전력공사와 한국에너지공대, 혁신도시 에너지밸리 등 국내 최대 에너지 클러스터를 보유하고 있어 유치 경쟁에서 강점을 갖는다는 평가를 받고 있다.

도 관계자는 “이번 릴레이 챌린지를 통해 도민의 참여 열기를 확산하고, 국가사업 유치의 동력을 더욱 높이겠다.”고 말했다.

Jeonnam Launches Province-Wide Relay Challenge to Secure ‘Artificial Sun’ Research Facility
Jeollanam-do has kicked off a province-wide relay challenge to build public momentum and support for attracting a next-generation artificial sun (nuclear fusion) research facility—considered a core pillar of future clean-energy industries.
Governor Kim Yung-rok, who led the campaign as its first participant, emphasized Jeonnam’s competitiveness, stating, “With world-class research infrastructure such as KEPCO, the Korea Institute of Energy Technology, and the Energy Valley, Jeonnam is the optimal location for this project. We will unite our citizens’ strength and secure this facility without fail.”
Governor Kim nominated Kim Tae-gyun, Chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, Kim Dae-jung, Superintendent of Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education, and Yoon Byung-tae, Mayor of Naju, as the next participants. The province plans to expand the relay challenge to include university presidents, local government leaders, and civic groups to further broaden public engagement and support.
Nuclear fusion, also known as the “artificial sun,” reproduces the process by which the sun generates energy, producing electricity from hydrogen. As it emits almost no carbon and offers high safety and economic efficiency, fusion energy is widely regarded as a future “power engine” capable of supporting the soaring electricity demands of the AI and data-driven era.
With abundant renewable energy such as solar and offshore wind, as well as the largest energy-industry cluster in Korea—including KEPCO, KENTECH, and the Energy Valley—Jeonnam is considered to hold major advantages in the national competition to host the facility.
An official from the province stated, “Through this relay challenge, we will expand public participation and build further momentum to secure this national project.”
