더불어민주당 전남·광주통합특별시장 후보인 민형배 국회의원(광주 광산구을)이 전남·광주를 ‘완결형 첨단 국방산업 도시’로 도약시키기 위한 구체적 산업 전략을 제시했다.

민 의원은 16일 광주광역시에 위치한 기아 오토랜드 광주에서 열린 전남·광주지역 방산업체 간담회에 참석하고 사업장을 시찰했다.
이번 간담회는 김병주 국회의원(경기 남양주시을) 주관으로 마련됐으며, 지역에 이미 구축된 방산 기반을 하나의 산업 생태계로 연결하고 실질적인 투자와 양산, 정비 체계로 발전시키기 위한 정책 논의의 출발점으로 평가된다.

이날 자리에는 민형배 의원과 김병주 의원을 비롯해 박균택·안도걸·정준호·정진욱 국회의원과 함께 기아를 포함한 나전, 아성프라텍, 광일기공, 호원, 동방산업, 코비코, 지앤씨, 코진테크, 현대하이텍 등 10여 개 방산 협력업체 임원들이 참석했다.
참석자들은 지역 방산 산업의 현황을 공유하고 기업 애로사항 및 제도 개선 과제를 논의하며 산업 고도화 방안을 모색했다.

민 의원은 “전남·광주는 방산을 새롭게 유치해야 하는 도시가 아니라 이미 군용차 생산과 드론 개발이 이뤄지고 있는 ‘실행형 산업 도시’”라고 규정했다.
이어 “광주에서는 군용차가 생산되고, 전남 고흥에서는 우주발사체 시험이 진행되며, 동부권에는 철강·화학·정밀가공 등 강력한 제조 기반이 집적돼 있다”고 강조했다.

특히 그는 현재 방산 인프라가 개별적으로 분산 운영되는 구조를 핵심 문제로 지목하며, 산업 간 연결의 필요성을 강하게 제기했다.
민 의원은 “군용차, 우주, 드론, 제조를 하나로 연결해 연구–시험–생산–정비까지 지역 내에서 완결되는 구조를 구축하겠다.”며 “단순한 산업 집적이 아니라 ‘전주기 순환형 국방 산업 생태계’로 전환해야 한다”고 밝혔다.

또한 광주의 인공지능(AI) 역량을 결합한 미래 국방 기술 개발 방향도 제시했다.
그는 “AI를 기반으로 자율주행 군용차, 무인 드론, 전장 데이터 분석 체계를 구축하면 전남·광주는 미래 전장 기술의 실증 거점이 될 수 있다”고 설명했다.

전남의 에너지 기반과 국방산업을 결합한 확장 전략도 강조됐다.
민 의원은 “핵심은 새로운 것을 만드는 것이 아니라 이미 존재하는 산업을 연결하는 것”이라며 “재생에너지와 결합한 ‘에너지·국방 융합 산업 모델’을 통해 산업 경쟁력을 획기적으로 끌어올릴 수 있다”고 말했다.

끝으로 그는 “전남·광주는 지금 ‘묘목’ 단계지만 방향은 분명하다.”며 “군용차–반도체–우주–드론–정비로 이어지는 완결형 산업 구조를 통해 시민이 체감하는 일자리와 소득 변화를 반드시 만들어내겠다.”고 강조했다.

Min Hyung-bae, a member of the National Assembly and candidate for mayor of the integrated Jeonnam–Gwangju metropolitan city (Gwangju Gwangsan-eul), has presented a comprehensive industrial strategy to transform the region into a “fully integrated advanced defense industry city.”
On the 16th, Rep. Min attended a defense industry roundtable with local companies and toured facilities at Kia Autoland Gwangju.
The meeting, hosted by Kim Byung-joo, a National Assembly member (Namyangju-eul, Gyeonggi), was organized as a starting point for policy discussions aimed at connecting existing regional defense capabilities into a unified industrial ecosystem, while advancing toward real investment, mass production, and maintenance systems.
The event brought together Rep. Min, Rep. Kim, and fellow lawmakers Park Gyun-taek, Ahn Do-geol, Jung Joon-ho, and Jung Jin-wook, along with executives from around 10 defense-related partner companies including Kia, Najeon, Aseong Pratech, Gwangil Machinery, Howon, Dongbang Industry, Kobico, G&C, Kojin Tech, and Hyundai Hitech.
Participants shared the current status of the regional defense sector, discussed industry challenges, and explored ways to upgrade industrial capabilities.
Rep. Min emphasized that “Jeonnam and Gwangju are not cities that need to attract defense industries—they are already places where military vehicles are produced and drones are being developed.”
He added, “Military vehicles are produced in Gwangju, space launch vehicles are tested in Goheung, and the eastern region has a strong manufacturing base including steel, chemicals, and precision processing.”
He identified the fragmented operation of existing defense infrastructure as a key issue and stressed the need for integration across industries.
“By linking military vehicles, space, drones, and manufacturing, we will build a structure in which research, testing, production, and maintenance are completed within the region,” he said. “This must evolve beyond simple industrial clustering into a full-cycle, circulating defense industry ecosystem.”
He also outlined a future direction that combines Gwangju’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with defense technologies.
“With AI, we can develop autonomous military vehicles, unmanned drones, and battlefield data analysis systems, positioning Jeonnam–Gwangju as a testbed for next-generation defense technologies,” he explained.
Rep. Min further highlighted an expansion strategy that integrates Jeonnam’s energy infrastructure with defense industries.
“The key is not creating something entirely new, but connecting what already exists,” he said, stressing the need to build an “energy-defense convergence model” leveraging renewable energy to enhance industrial competitiveness.
In closing, he stated, “Jeonnam and Gwangju may still be at the ‘seedling’ stage, but the direction is clear. Through a fully integrated industrial structure linking military vehicles, semiconductors, space, drones, and maintenance, we will deliver tangible changes in jobs and income that citizens can truly feel.”
