First Public Pediatric Rehabilitation Medical Center Opens in Jeonnam
“Children with Disabilities Can Now Grow and Recover Close to Home”
On the 3rd, Jeollanam-do held an opening ceremony for the Nexon Public Pediatric Rehabilitation Medical Center at Mokpo Central Hospital, marking the first step in providing a Jeonnam-style public rehabilitation medical service that supports the healthy recovery and growth of children with disabilities.
The ceremony was attended by over 150 people, including Jeonnam Provincial Director of Health and Welfare Jeong Gwang-seon, Mokpo Acting Mayor Cho Seok-hoon, National Assembly member Kim Won-i, Mokpo City Council Chairman Cho Sung-oh, and Nexon Foundation Chairman Kim Jeong-wook. The event featured a performance by students from Sorim School, followed by a progress report on the center’s construction, awards for contributors, a vision declaration performance, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
A special moment of the event was the presentation of a plaque of appreciation to the Nexon Foundation, which donated 5 billion won for the construction of the center, highlighting the significance of the public-private collaboration in expanding public medical infrastructure.
The Jeonnam Nexon Public Pediatric Rehabilitation Medical Center is a public specialized institution providing early diagnosis, intensive rehabilitation therapy, parental education, and care for children with disabilities. It is the first public pediatric rehabilitation center in Jeonnam.
The center was built at a total cost of 12.2 billion won, spanning three floors above ground and one basement floor with a total area of 1,800㎡. It is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including speech, occupational, and physical therapy rooms, a sensory integration therapy room, and a 20-bed day ward. The center has a full-time medical staff of 17, including one rehabilitation medicine specialist, two nurses, and 14 therapists.
Since its completion in August, the center has been operating on a trial basis and has already provided rehabilitation services, with 36 children receiving a total of 386 treatments. This has improved medical accessibility for local children with disabilities and eased the psychological and financial burdens on their families.
Kim Jeong-wook, Chairman of the Nexon Foundation, said, “We hope the opening of this center will serve as a starting point to provide essential medical services to children with disabilities and their families in the region.” Center Director Jeong Gwang-ik added, “We will create a therapeutic environment that supports the recovery and growth of every single child.”
Jeong Gwang-seon, Director of Health and Welfare of Jeonnam Province, emphasized, “It is meaningful to be able to reduce the burden on parents who previously had to travel long distances for rehabilitation therapy. We will focus all administrative efforts on ensuring that every child receives treatment without discrimination.”
Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province plans to open the Regional Dental Care Center for People with Disabilities at Suncheon Medical Center in the first half of 2026, with an investment of 2.8 billion won. The center will provide specialized dental care and surgery for people with disabilities.
Additionally, Jeonnam is expanding field-oriented health services through the operation of four disability-friendly health screening centers and the Jeonnam Regional Center for Health and Medical Care for People with Disabilities, offering customized health screenings for people with disabilities and maternal health support for women with disabilities.
