민형배, ‘대동세상 완성’ 통합특별시 선언

더불어민주당 전남·광주통합특별시장 후보로 선출된 민형배 국회의원(광주 광산구을)이 ‘오월 정신’을 전면에 내세우며 통합특별시의 방향을 강하게 제시했다.
민 후보는 15일 공식 첫 일정으로 국립5·18민주묘지를 찾아 참배하고, 전남·광주 통합특별시를 ‘오월 대동세상’의 완성 형태로 만들겠다는 구상을 밝혔다.

이날 민 후보는 윤상원 열사 묘역을 참배한 뒤 기자들과 만나 “오월 정신과 대동 정신을 전남·광주 통합의 핵심 가치로 삼겠다.”며 “5월 영령들의 뜻을 결코 잊지 않겠다.”고 강조했다.

특히 그는 “5·18이 보여준 대동세상은 단순한 과거의 기억이 아니라, 우리가 반드시 완성해야 할 미래”라며 “그 정신을 전남광주통합특별시로 실현하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

윤상원 열사 묘 앞에서는 더욱 강한 메시지를 내놓았다.
민 후보는 “윤상원 열사의 죽음이 오늘의 광주를 만들었다”며 “죽은 자들이 산 자를 살린다는 그 숭고한 뜻을 가슴 깊이 새기겠다.”고 말했다. 이어 “그 정신 위에서 새로운 시대를 향한 투쟁과 실천을 이어가겠다.”고 덧붙였다.
민 후보는 이번 참배를 단순한 의례가 아닌 ‘정치적 출발 선언’으로 규정했다.

그는 “오월 정신을 오늘의 민주주의와 지역 발전으로 연결하는 것이 우리의 시대적 과제”라며 “전남·광주를 정의와 연대, 그리고 지속 가능한 성장의 중심 도시로 반드시 만들어내겠다”고 강조했다.
전남·광주 통합특별시 출범을 앞둔 가운데, 민형배 후보의 이번 행보는 통합의 가치와 방향을 ‘오월 정신’에 명확히 고정시키는 선언으로 해석된다.

정치권에서는 이를 두고 “단순한 행정 통합을 넘어, 역사와 가치에 기반한 ‘정신적 통합’을 전면에 내세운 메시지”라는 평가가 나오고 있다.

“May Is Not Over”… Min Hyung-bae Declares ‘Unified Special City’ to Complete the Spirit of Solidarity
First official visit to the May 18 National Cemetery… “The spirit of May and solidarity is the absolute value of integration”
Min Hyung-bae, a member of the National Assembly elected as the Democratic Party’s candidate for the Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City mayor, has strongly presented the direction of the integrated city by placing the “Spirit of May” at its core.
On the 15th, as his first official schedule, Min visited the May 18 National Cemetery to pay his respects, unveiling his vision to complete the “community of solidarity” embodied in the May Uprising through the Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City.
After paying tribute at the grave of martyr Yoon Sang-won, Min told reporters, “We will establish the spirit of May and the spirit of solidarity as the core values of the Jeonnam–Gwangju integration,” adding, “We will never forget the will of the spirits of May.”
He further emphasized, “The community of solidarity demonstrated by May 18 is not merely a memory of the past, but a future we must complete,” stating, “We will realize that spirit through the Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City.”
Standing before Yoon Sang-won’s grave, Min delivered an even stronger message.
“The death of Yoon Sang-won created today’s Gwangju,” he said, adding, “I will deeply engrave in my heart the noble meaning that the dead save the living.” He continued, “On that spirit, we will carry forward the struggle and practice toward a new era.”
Min defined this visit not as a simple ceremonial act, but as a “political declaration of departure.”
He stated, “Connecting the spirit of May to today’s democracy and regional development is our task of the times,” adding, “We will make Jeonnam and Gwangju a central city of justice, solidarity, and sustainable growth.”
As the launch of the Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City approaches, Min’s move is interpreted as a declaration that firmly anchors the values and direction of integration in the “Spirit of May.”
Political circles have assessed this as “a message that goes beyond administrative integration, placing ‘spiritual integration’ based on history and values at the forefront.”
